Hercule Poirot once said, “I am learning, Hastings. It is more English, yes, the humbleness? So, I am learning. I shall be the most humble person in the world. No one will match Hercule Poirot for his humbility…” (“The Mystery of the Spanish Chest” Poirot S3.E8)
I did not believe humility was a desirable trait for the early part of my life. I was more attracted to confidence, power, and performance. I thought of humility as weakness, self-deprecation, and insecurity.
Today, I see humility as the most beautiful quality in a human being. Only God can create humility in a person; it cannot be self-generated. True humility is to embrace God’s negative assessment of human pride, and to see others as more significant than yourself. We can pray for humility—for the death of our pride, followed by the resurrection power of Jesus to give us a heart of faith and trust in Him.
God can change us at our core with the power of the gospel. Jesus demonstrated humility, and by doing so, He conquered all His enemies. He brought glory to God by taking the lowest position. We can receive that strength from Jesus as we allow Him to wash our feet, filling up our tanks with His love and compassion, and then giving that love to others. Greatness in God’s kingdom comes from serving God and others out of a heart overflowing with joy, compassion, and kindness.
Let’s groan for humility today, and worship God who sent His Son not to be served, but to serve and give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45).
When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
-John 13:12-17
Thank you, Mrs. Dr.Janet A.,
again, yes, we are all knowing we need to be humbled and especially in at certain times more than others, an example of one of those times, IE. is with families there are,
of course, other instances, and Jesus always makes us understand the way of true uprightness in our dealing.
They were the ones who were given the orders to watch for the enemy?
